Cyclone Laila has made landfall on the southern Indian coast, battering the area with heavy rains and strong winds, officials say.

Winds of 90km/h (55mph) have uprooted trees and electricity poles. More than 50,000 people have been evacuated.


Cyclone Laila leaves trail of devastation; 17 dead

At least 17 people were killed and three others were missing as cyclone Laila left a trail of devastation in coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh damaging road networks and destroying crops.

Cyclone Phet unlikely to affect UAE weather

The tropical cyclone Phet will have minimal effect on the UAE weather as it is expected to move slowly towards Pakistan and India, according to a weather alert issued by the national weather bureau.

Phet is currently located in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Oman. It has intensified quickly in the last 24 hours.


The National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) said the satellite imagery shows Phet is on the northwest Arabian Sea and its eye is about 360km away from the coast of Oman.
Cyclone Laila Hits Southeast India, 23 Killed

The death toll from a powerful cyclone that slammed into southeastern India, toppling power lines and triggering landslides, has climbed to 23, a top official said Friday.
